J.A. Biz Town

Fifth graders in Waukee have a great opportunity at the end of the year to learn what it takes to have a "real" job.  They get to apply for "jobs" and go to Biz Town and work together as a community and apply everything they have learned about their job.  Anna interviewed to be the CFO of the Radio Station and did a GREAT job.  Math is by far her best subject and working with money and the computer were very natural for her.  Her Radio Station consisted of eight kids... all with different jobs.  They ranged from CEO and CFO to DJs, Reporters and so forth.  Anna's job was applying for a loan from the bank and making sure that everyone worked together to pay off their loan by the end of the day.  With Anna's persistence they paid off their loan quickly and even had a large profit for their day.  Each child earns a pay check and is able to purchase things within the community to help businesses pay off their loans.  The Radio Station sold songs to be played over the speakers for $2.00 a song and it was a huge hit.  There were lots of "fifth grade crush" dedications throughout the day.  HA!!!!    Each child gets a lunch break and an afternoon break to walk away from their "job" and hang out with their friends and shop within the community.  Each child earns two paychecks thoughout the day that they deposit into the bank and then write checks to purchase items within the community.   I worked in the Restaurant with a group of eight fifth graders and sold pop and snapple to pay off our loan which we were able to do as well.  It was a SUPER fun day and certainly something Anna will remember for a long time.

Here are some pictures from the Internet of what the actual facility looks like.
What a great experience for all these kids!!!
